I construct the surface by attaching the grid like Papel de Amate to Khadi paper. Papel de Amate is made by the Atomi/Otami peoples of the central Mexico mountain region. The Atomi slice veneer like strips of Fig Ficus spp wood and lattice them together in a grid pattern. Khadi paper is handmade in the Khadi region of southern India from recycled cotton rags. The overlay creates a grid like relief. The windows become paintings within the overall patterned web. In layering the colors onto the surface the finished overall color pattern develops as a natural progression. In the final process I draw the colors together with a flat, pointed bone and completion of work with burnishing the surface with a soft cheese cloth. The burnishing of my work binds the waxes/pigment with heat/fire. The grid implies the connecting between all that is. Within the windows representing the individuality and contrasting aspects of each that is; couple relationships, global communities relationship or the inner dynamic of each of me/us. It can represent philosophies, politics, and/or non human entities; bears and/or mollusks, the inanimate, the immaterial or mountains, the oceans and/or the streams , the philosophies, religions and/or the politics. The Sun and or the Moon. The cosmos as infinite.
